Personal History Artie Talbot was born with a silver spoon. His mother died shortly after childbirth, leaving his father to raise him alone. Nothing was spared in raising Artie, and it was a true miracle that it didn’t go to his son’s head. The best education, the best care, the best England had to offer went into educating and raising this child.

As Artie grew up, he spent many days with his father, a well-respected lawyer practicing commercial law. He got to see the inside of many corporations, businesses and science centers. On one fateful trip, 12-year old Artie accompanied his father to oversee drafting of a contract between a civilian firm and Starfleet Research and Development. He became fascinated with the technology under development by both organizations and it set his mind to tinker. At home, he began to take apart everything he could find, nearly dismantling the family home in the process. Everything he touched became modified and pressed back into the family’s service better than when it was manufactured.

Obviously, Arthur wasn’t satisfied with what England had to offer and even turned down prestigious opportunities to attend Oxford and continue the family practice that had existed for generations. His father was appalled when his son chose to enroll in Starfleet Academy, resulting in many years of not speaking to each other. It was only months after graduation, and a long list of success stories when Artie worked (many years later) at Starfleet Research and Development on Earth were the fences mended, restoring a healthy father-son relationship once more.

Before beginning his illustrious career at R&D, Arthur took to the stars aboard the USS Epsilon as an Engineer’s Mate. In his two-year tour, Artie got his hands on almost anything. Technology, EPS manifolds, waste extraction, technical manuals… they were all equal to him. At least they were until the first time he was placed into an emergency situation. He became trapped in the middle of the port nacelle in the middle of an ion storm along with six other engineers. Cut off from communications and other means of contact, Artie led the team to neutralize hazardous radiation from emitting from the power transfer conduit that would have severely killed them all.

Artie left that pylon with a new found love for warp theory, so much so that he began to specialize in the subject. The Epsilon, however, had no room for warp field specialists, so Artie quickly transferred to the USS Argo. That assignment didn’t last long when his former Chief Engineer pulled some strings to get him back on the Epsilon. When the Epsilon was put into drydock for a refit, Artie transferred to the USS Nautilus as an Assistant Chief Engineer.

The Nautilus was very good about keeping him away from the warp core. He was soon headhunted by Starfleet Research and Development with a very tempting offer, which Artie accepted. For the next four years, Artie was instrumental in designing a new warp core that was ten percent more efficient, emitted twenty percent less radiation, and would increase the warp speed of smaller starships nearly a complete half of a warp factor, and all the while decreasing the amount of hardware replacement by eighty percent.

At the beginning of 2388, when enough resources were secured for the initial run, Artie found himself assigned as the On-Location Supervisor to Starbase 375 where the first batch of ships, including the Steamrunner-class USS Altai, would be the test bed for the project. Unfortunately, the Altai was pushed out of dock all too early for a mission of urgent humanitarian aid. Following the mission, Artie found himself promoted to First Officer.
