Personal History Born on January 1, 2354--according to the Terran calendar--Tol was the son of two Starfleet engineers, one a starship designer, the other a warp field specialist. Both his parents encouraged him to follow in their footsteps, and this he did. By age 13, Tol was fully engaged in solving T'Akur's Proof, a rather thorny and some would say overly complicated Vulcan Mathematics puzzle.

Entering Starfleet Academy in 2372, Tol excelled at starship operations and engineering. Offered a place in Red Squad--the later ill-fated elete cadet unit--he turned it down, saying that membership in such a group would only hamper his studies. Graduating third in his class, Tol was immediately assigned to Earth Spacedock as an engineering field test consultant. There he met his wife Tih'Lon, and Andorian Aenar acting as an interpreter for one of the design engineers who was deaf. (This engineer, unrelatedly, had several idiosyncracies, including refusing to have any sort of implant which would eenable him to hear). Immediately attracted to one another, the two were married within a year and a half.

In 2382, Tol was reassigned to the starship Galvaston. Tih'Lon, who had gone through the Academy herself by this point, was assigned to the Cairo. Tol moved up the ranks of the engineers on the Galvaston, reaching full lieutenancy status in 2386. (This was not through any lack of effort on his part--he simply did not wish to take more promotions when offered to him). Tol transferred aboard the starship Altai in 2389, and Tih'Lon asked for a transfer to Deep Space 11 so she could be at least in the same general area as her husband.
